How to add notes to an interview

Keep your own observations beside the transcript on iPhone, iPad or Mac, in a notes field that travels with the interview everywhere it goes.

A transcript records what was said. It does not record what you thought about it. The notes field is where your own observations live, attached to the interview rather than scattered across another app.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the interview.
  2. Below the header — where duration, date and average confidence are shown — find the field marked Add Notes….
  3. Tap it and type.
  4. Tap outside the field, or dismiss the keyboard, when you are finished.

On Mac

  1. Open the interview.
  2. Click into the notes area under the title, which shows Add Notes… until you write something.
  3. Type. Click elsewhere when you are done.

Notes save as you write. There is no separate save step on either platform.

What notes are for

Notes belong to the interview as a whole, not to a particular moment in it. They suit the things you want to see the instant you reopen a recording: context that never got said out loud, what to follow up on, why this interview mattered.

For something tied to one specific passage, edit the transcript at that point instead — see editing a transcript.

Where notes turn up

Notes are stored inside the interview document, so they travel with it. They sync to your other devices through the iCloud folder, and they are included when you share the document with someone who has Transcriber.

Because they are part of the document, sharing an interview shares your notes along with it. If you have written something you would rather not pass on, export the transcript as a PDF instead — see exporting your interviews.
