How to export your interviews from Transcriber

Share a Transcriber document, export the audio, produce a PDF or send a transcript by email — on iPhone, iPad and Mac — and pick the right format each time.

Transcriber hands an interview over in four formats. Which you want depends on what the person receiving it needs to do with it.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the interview.
  2. Tap the share button.
  3. Choose Share Document, Export Audio, Transcript as PDF or Share via Email.
  4. The standard iOS share sheet takes over from there.

On Mac

  1. Open the interview.
  2. Click Share in the toolbar — its tooltip reads Shares the selected document in different forms.
  3. Choose the same four options.

The email option only appears when your device has email set up.

Which format to choose

Share Document sends everything — audio, transcript, notes and settings — as a single .trbr file. Anyone with Transcriber can open it and carry on working, which makes it right for a colleague who will edit the transcript, and wrong for someone without the app, who will not be able to open it at all.

Export Audio is just the recording. Use it when someone needs the source material, for archiving, or to hand the audio to a different tool.

Transcript as PDF is what you want when the recipient simply needs to read. It opens anywhere, and the export carries the created and updated dates.

Share via Email puts the transcript straight into a message — the fastest route for a short quote or a couple of paragraphs.

What the transcript exports include

If you have hidden timestamps, the export follows what you see on screen. Turn timestamps back on first if you want timing information included — Text only mode in the document settings on iPhone and iPad, or Toggle Timestamps in the Mac toolbar.

Where speaker detection was enabled, the speaker tags appear in the export too.

Getting a document back in

A .trbr file someone sends you is imported the same way as audio — see importing an audio file.
