Default transcription settings for every interview

Change the model, profanity filter, spoken punctuation and speaker detection once on iPhone, iPad or Mac, so every new interview starts from your preferences.

If you adjust the same settings on every interview, set them as your defaults once instead. Every new recording and import then starts from your preferences.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the side menu.
  2. Under Settings, choose General.

Each setting has a short explanation underneath, so you can read what something does without leaving the screen.

On Mac

  1. Choose Transcriber → Preferences…, or press ⌘,.
  2. Stay on the General tab.

What you can set

Default Language — see changing your default language.

Default Model — the recognition model. Long form conversation suits interviews and meetings; the full list is in transcription settings for one interview.

Profanity Filter, Spoken Punctuation, Speaker Diarization and Max speaker count — identical to their per-interview counterparts, applied to everything new.

The same screen also holds settings that are not about transcription: starting a recording when the app opens, always locking new interviews, and how long deleted interviews are kept before they go for good. On iPhone and iPad you will also find Rotate 180° when recording and your consent and newsletter preferences there.

How defaults and overrides interact

These are starting values, not locks. A new interview takes a copy of your defaults when it is created, and you can change anything on that interview before transcribing.

Changing a default never reaches back into interviews that already exist. Change the model today and yesterday’s recordings keep the model they were created with — and anything already transcribed keeps its transcript until you run Transcribe again.

Settings are stored per device, so the Mac and the iPhone each keep their own.
