The default language is what Transcriber uses for every new interview unless you override it for a specific one. Setting it correctly once saves a step on every recording.
On iPhone and iPad
- Open the side menu.
- Under Settings, choose General.
- The first entry is Default Language:. Tap it.
- Search or scroll to the language and select it.
On Mac
- Choose Transcriber → Preferences… in the menu bar, or press ⌘,.
- Stay on the General tab.
- Pick the language from Default Language:.
The Preferences window has three tabs — General, Passcode locker and Permissions. Everything about transcription lives under General.
What it affects
The default applies to new interviews only. Interviews that already exist keep the language they were given, and anything already transcribed is left alone.
Because the setting is stored per device, changing it on your Mac does not change it on your iPhone. Set it in both places if you work across the two.
Choose the spoken language
Set this to the language people actually speak in your recordings. Transcriber converts speech to text in that same language; it does not translate.
If you regularly work in two languages, set the default to the one you record in most often and override the other case by case — see setting the language for a single interview. There is no penalty for switching; the setting is a starting point, not a commitment.
