How to lock sensitive interviews in Transcriber

Set up the passcode locker on iPhone, iPad or Mac, lock individual interviews behind Face ID or Touch ID, and have every new recording locked automatically.

Some interviews need more protection than the rest of your library. The locker protects individual interviews, so everyday recordings stay open and only what matters is locked.

Set up the locker first

Before you can lock anything, create the passcode.

On iPhone and iPad: open the side menu and choose Settings → Passcode locker.

On Mac: choose Transcriber → Preferences… (⌘,) and select the Passcode locker tab.

Then, on either:

  1. Enter a password under Password for Locker.
  2. Repeat it under Confirm password.
  3. Choose Save.

The password is stored in your iCloud Keychain, so it follows you to your other devices and is never something we see. That also means we cannot recover it — if you lose it, the interviews it protects stay locked.

Lock a single interview

On iPhone and iPad, open the interview, open Document settings and turn on Passcode locker.

On Mac, open the interview and click Locker in the toolbar — Locks and Unlocks your sensitive documents. The button reads Lock Document or Unlock Document depending on the current state.

The interview locks immediately. Opening it again asks for Face ID or Touch ID, with the passcode as the fallback — the prompt offers Cancel if you would rather type it.

Lock every new interview automatically

If most of your work is sensitive, invert the default. Open Settings → General on iPhone and iPad, or the General tab of Preferences on Mac, and turn on Always lock interviews.

Every recording you start and every file you import from then on arrives locked. Existing interviews are not changed.

What locking does and does not do

Locking controls access to an interview inside the app. It does not encrypt an exported file — once you share a document, a PDF or the audio, the lock does not travel with it. Think before exporting something you deliberately locked.

Change or remove the password from the same Passcode locker screen where you set it up.
