How to set the language for a single interview

Override your default transcription language for one recording on iPhone, iPad or Mac, when a single interview is in a different language from the rest.

Transcriber transcribes each interview in one language, and by default uses the language from your general settings. When a single interview is in a different language, override it just for that one.

The Transcription setup box appears on any interview that has not been transcribed yet, just above the Transcribe button — on every platform.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the interview.
  2. In the Transcription setup box, tap Default Language:.
  3. The picker opens with a search field. Transcriber supports over 120 languages and regional variants, so searching beats scrolling.
  4. Choose the language, then tap Transcribe.

On Mac

  1. Open the interview.
  2. In the Transcription setup box, click the language selector.
  3. Pick the language from the list.
  4. Click Transcribe.

Pick the spoken language

Choose the language spoken in the audio, not the language you want the result in. Transcriber transcribes; it does not translate.

If the interview is already transcribed

Changing the language does not re-transcribe on its own. Set the correct language and run Transcribe again for a fresh transcript.

Your previous transcript is not discarded — Transcriber keeps every version it produces, so re-running is safe.

Regional variants matter

English (United Kingdom) and English (United States) give noticeably different results on the same audio, and so do German (Germany) versus German (Austria), or Portuguese (Brazil) versus Portuguese (Portugal). If a transcript comes back weaker than expected, check the variant before anything else.

To change the language for everything instead, see setting your default language.
