How to sync your interviews with iCloud

Keep interviews in the iCloud folder on iPhone, iPad and Mac so they appear on every device signed in to your Apple account, and know what stays local.

Transcriber keeps your interviews in folders, and one of them is backed by iCloud. Anything in it is available on your other devices without exporting or sending anything by hand.

The folders

  • My Recordings — interviews stored on this device
  • iCloud — interviews stored in your iCloud folder
  • Watch Recordings — interviews recorded on your Apple Watch
  • Archive — interviews you have deleted, kept for a while before they go

On iPhone and iPad, open the side menu and look under Folders.

On Mac, the folders are in the sidebar. If you cannot see it, click Toggle Sidebar in the toolbar.

Working in the iCloud folder

An interview kept in the iCloud folder syncs automatically. When you open one, Transcriber says as much: This file is automatically synced with your iCloud’s folder on your iPhone.

Sync is handled by iCloud itself, under your own Apple account. The documents sit in your personal iCloud storage — we receive no copy and no record of what you keep there.

Before you rely on it

Syncing needs a network connection and a little time. Give a long recording a moment to upload before you expect it on another device.

Interviews in My Recordings stay on that device only. If a recording matters, it is worth thinking about the fact that it then exists in one place, on one machine.

Because the files live in your iCloud storage, they count against your iCloud quota. Audio adds up considerably faster than text.

A note on the Apple Watch

Recordings made on the Watch arrive in Watch Recordings. They transfer to your iPhone rather than syncing through iCloud, so keep the two devices in range until the transfer finishes.
